Senior Management Team

I am Matt Hickey, Headteacher here at Highwood.  I am originally from Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire but I have lived in Reading ever since graduating from the Bulmershe Campus of Reading University.  I never imagined that 20 years later I would be Headteacher at the closest Primary School to where it all began – it’s a small world!

I have worked in three schools prior to Highwood.  Two were in Bracknell Forest - Owlsmoor and Meadow Vale Primary School and the other was in Wokingham - Whiteknights Primary School.  The experience I gained at these has enabled me to have a great understanding of how to help Highwood continue to improve. My spare time is filled with playing 5 a-side football, supporting Scunthorpe United and as a father of four gorgeous girls, I seem to spend a lot of time at gymnastics, ballet and swimming.  I am also a governor at Ambleside Children’s Centre as a way of positively contributing to the community in which I live and now work.

My name is Mrs. Kearslake and I have been at the school since 2002 and worked as Deputy Head since 2004. As you can imagine, I have seen lots of changes at Highwood since I arrived! I have been teaching in KS2 Maple Resource  and I can honestly say that I love every minute of it! As part of my role on the Senior Management Team, I am responsible for making sure that the curriculum is very exciting for all the children. The thing I like doing most is writing and producing some of the plays we do at school and at the Oakwood Centre. The children always rise to the occasion brilliantly. I look forward to doing some more in the near future.

My name is Mr Bevan and I have worked at Highwood since 2005. Over the years my role in the school has changed slightly from leading KS1 to my current role of ‘Head of Inclusion and Pastoral Care’. My role in the school sees me working closely with both children and parents across the school. I am also responsible for ‘Child Protection’ at Highwood which basically means I am responsible for making sure that all children that attend the school are safe, happy and well looked after. I work with parents to support them with the behaviour of their children both in school and at home. Another part of my job involves assessment across the school. I work with the Head teacher and the SMT to ensure that all children at Highwood are well supported to achieve their best.  Please feel free to come and say hello if we haven’t met yet, I really enjoy meeting new members of our school community.

I am Mrs. Vaux and I joined Highwood in 2015. I am the Phase Leader for Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. I come from a background of Early Years specialism, and am currently the class teacher for Year 1. I recognise the importance of these early years for all pupils, and really enjoy the challenge of ensuring they get the best possible start to education. I also support the local education authority as a specialist leader of education for Early Years.

I am Miss Baker, the Key Stage Two Phase Leader at Highwood. I started working here in 2009. In my role as Phase Leader, I oversee the progress and development of the children from Year 3 to Year 6 – it is a real pleasure to see them grow and develop in to the young adults we send off to Secondary School at the end of Year 6! It is great fun being part of the Key Stage Two team! I have also worked as part of the local education authority as a Year 6 moderator for a number of years.

My name is Mrs Edwards and I’m the School Business Manager at Highwood. I’ve worked here since 2009. My role means I have responsibility for the school's Finances, Human Resources, Facilities and Health and Safety. It’s a really interesting role with lots of variety.  I have a friendly and helpful team who work in the school office - Mrs Westall and Miss Mann  - and a very efficient and knowledgeable Site Controller Mr Green, who looks after our building and grounds. I really enjoy my job, and love working at Highwood.
